Don't you love those pesky little raccoons?! You need to use a more secure trashcan. If you can use your own, go get one that has a secure lid. If it's provided, use bungee cords to hold it shut. You also need to limit the smells coming from your garbage. Always wrap food up tightly in bags. There are many ways to deter raccoons (do a google search), but one easy way I use is to sprinkle a little powder around the can and in it. They HATE to have stuff on their paws. Either that or leave a hot dog in your neighbor's can and hope they don't have time for yours ;-)

Get a trash can that has a lid for it and then secure the lid with wire or rubber bungie cords so they cannot get it open. Also secure the trash container to a fence or post or tree so the animals cannot pull it over and dump it. I learned all these the hard way after picking up a few dumped containers myself. Now I don't have that problem.

rubbermaid sells an outdoor garbage can that has a lock for the lid you put the lid on and pull down the handles and it keeps the lid on so no animals can get in... and other then that you could also make a housing for the garbage cans that is like a fance that goes around 2 sides of them and attaches to the house... it hides the cans so you dont see them as much makes the house look neater and helps keep animals out...

Try a metal can with a tight-fitting lid. Secure the can so critters can't knock it over (to a post or wall), and also secure the lid so it can't be lifted off (small chain, strap or clips). Unless you are dealing with bears, this should work.
You could also put the cans behind fencing of some sort to keep them from getting close to it. This would also hide the cans.

Is it your garbage or a neighbor's???
If it is yours, there are lots of things you can do:
1. Don't put your garbage out until the day of pickup.
2. Try those bags that are very tough, maybe animals can't get into them.
3. Buy yourself several large garbage containers that have lids... animals won't get into them if the lids are on... and if they do get inside, they might be trapped.
4. Put your garbage, carefully, in your trunk, then drop it in a dumpster on your way to work..we have one at the yacht club, so when I have extra garbage, I just put it in the dumpster... and they don't mind one bit.

Sounds like raccoons. Trap them in a varmint trap and put them somewhere else if you can. They are smart , strong and annoying.
Put the cans in your garage for awhile or build a wood container that locks.

spray a mixture of olive oil and garlic in a 6" swath around the circumferance of your can. The smell will keep them away. And the garlic will not be so strong that you can really smell it, just when the varmits get close to the can.
