TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's policies of standing up to the United States have set off a "powerful bomb in the world of politics" bigger than the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday.

The comments, carried by state television and radio, come amid prolonged tension between Washington and Tehran over Iran's nuclear program. U.S. officials say Iran is trying to build an atom bomb but Tehran insists its plans are peaceful.

Iran has refused to halt sensitive nuclear work, despite U.S. threats to ratchet up pressure with new U.N. sanctions. Two rounds of sanctions have already been imposed since December.

"The political field of today's world is a complicated field with a great war of wills and policies ... It can be said that Iran has exploded a powerful bomb in the world of politics that is hundred times more powerful than the bomb the Americans exploded in Hiroshima,"

The other half of the article

"Even Europeans are speechless before this oppressive America, but the Iranian nation by its actions and stances has placed a question mark over all the rules and principles of this oppressive power."

U.S. and Iranian officials are due to hold a rare face-to-face meeting on May 28 in Baghdad. But both sides say the talks will focus on Iraqi security, not other issues.

Washington accuses Tehran of fuelling the violence in Iraq, a charge Tehran dismisses. Iran blames the U.S. occupying forces for the bloodshed.

Khamenei is the highest authority in Iran under its system of clerical rule.

The United States dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and another on Nagasaki shortly before Japan surrendered at the end of World War Two.

From what I've read, most Iranians want to have good relations with the United States. We do not need to fear them.

We are in a world where too many extremists have garnered too much power. -- As is shown in the article you posted. Too bad that we have similar sorts over here.

The shape, the 4th modification, habeas corpus, and the posse comutatus are issues that risk-free shield the Republic from neocon goons who might turn the U. S. right into a police state. No Iranian missiles have been fired at US warships. If we attack Iran, i do no longer blame them for retaliating. undergo in suggestions the CIA helped overthrow their government in1954. Bush said publicly, he invaded Iraq because God told him too. Now that is dangerous as can be, coming from the President of a Nation, which spends almost 1 Trillion a year on the military and wars, more then the rest of the world together. If Kim from Korea, Ali from Iran or Mugabe from Zaire, or Ellie from the Valley talks stupid stuff, why do we have to even listen, let em talk all day long, Bush is much more a problem and its in house

I supsect Iran has aspirations to world power, and opposing the US is one way to get there. It's a high-stakes gamble, but if, the US continues it's long established policy of not bombing Iran no matter what Iran may do to provoke it, they have a shot.

Tehran's leaders are trying to look good to the people that matter to them. That would be other Arab leaders. They also think that it is hypocritical for us to have atom bombs, and tell them they can't. Just so you know, I would worry a lot more if they had one.

I can't speak for extremists because I can't wrap my head around their illogical attitudes. I do know that the U.S. opened a Pandora's Box in the Middle East with their presence in Iraq.

Yeah lets keep being the tough guy and invading countries and telling them what we think they should do. Worked well for Rome and Britian didn't it? Stupid is as stupid does.

We keep telling them what to do without the total support of the world and we are going to find out if they think this way. I for one don't want to be around when they do.

despite the article's powerful political bomb statement...yeah iran sees itself as the most advanced of the arab coultures...and because of its religious rule, they are also then viewed to themselves to be the protector of islam...so it makes sense that they try to spit in our eye whenever possible...

give it a few years...let them make their small nuclear suitcase bomb and detonate it in our countyr or in isreal...cause thats what it is going to take for the rest of the world to finlly climb on board our iran wagon...

then hopefully we will be afforded the opportunity to turn iran into a desert of glass....not sand...and hey hopefully due in a few of our other "friends" over there as well...

and then finally...a lil peace in this world
