The Delicate Dependency - Michael Talbot - Unfortunately this book is out of print, but perhaps you can find it in the library or at a second hand book store. It is a vampire book, but certainly not a typical one. In this book the vampires act as guardians of humanity and in some cases do what they must to suppress certain dangerous knowledge from being made public. The hero, creates a virus that lacks antigenicity and becomes tangled in a very interesting web of intrigue. It is definitely a book that makes one think about the balance between pure science and the good of humanity.
As for other books, Anything by Kurt Vonnegut is a good choice.

My favorite book of all time has to be Pay it Forward By Catherine Ryan Hyde. This quote from the book sums it up nicely
"because it proves you don't need much to change the entire world for the better. You can start with the most ordinary ingredients. You can start with the world you've got."
I always keep 3 copies of this book on my bookshelf, and have bought about 20 copies over the years as gifts.

Hey,
You got a lot of answers. One I did not see on the list is a series by a fellow I went to see at a book signing. His name is Jeff Stone and he writes a series about 5 boys (actually one is a girl posing as a boy) who studied Kung Fu in China in ancient times. First book is called Tiger, second Monkey, Snake, etc. Easy read. Totally different.
