I indicate the perameter I'm comfortable with and tell them clearly... "This *gestures with arms* is MY space... This *gestures grandly*.. is YOUR space... "

I'm someone who prefers a nice amount of personal space, about 3-4'.
If I feel my "space" is encroached upon, I typically take a couple steps back. If they persist, I let them come right up, nose-to-nose and then I reach over and touch their arm or elbow as we continue our conversation....most take the hint and back up without saying a word and seemingly unoffended....! Go figure!

I guess it depends on who is doing the violating.
for the most part... I'm going to say something, and more often than not I'm going to say something quick witted, and shocking.....
I like my personal space... and value it deeply.

I tell people to back off if they are too close, or if they are IN my personal stuff, I let them know to NEVER do it again!
