gas is squirted into the cylinder. it is ignited. this causes a mini explosion which causes gases to expand. this pushes the piston down just like on your bike when u push down on the pedal. the piston turns the crankshaft which eventually turns the tires and sends u down the road!

Gasoline, as a liquid, gets mixed with air in the carburetor, or at the fuel injectors. A piston moves down in a cylinder, creating a vacuum. Vaporized gasoline mixed with air are drawn into the cylinder. Then, the piston moves up and compresses the gas and air mixture to about 1/10 of the volume of the cylinder. At the top of the stroke, the spark plug gives off a spark, ignites the gas and air mixture, causes an explosion, which forces the piston downward, with great force. The piston turns the crank shaft, which turns a fly wheel which turns the transmission, which eventually turns the drive wheels of the car.
