It works fine with the yellow ethernet cable, but as soon as I remove it I can't get a wireless connection. I've assigned the right IP address and network key - and my computer says it's connected and a strong signal, but still no web pages.

I phoned Sky and they said I had to update the driver for my antennae, but I'm not so sure...?

firstly are you connecting to the right router make sure its yours and not your neighbours ( yes i have seen someone try this)
secondly check that your sky router is registering your connection, most routers have logs of who is connected or show active connections.
make sure you have the correct security key and MAC address (if using mac filter)
also try checking that if you have a firewall on your PC that it is set to allow connection on your wireless adaptor. as it will likely have a different IP address to the wired ethernet.
does your router allow DHCP? if so change it to use dhcp and set your wireless card tcp/ip setting to obain ip address automatically. this way you can also verify settings.

if using static IP address, make sure that you assing a different address to the wired and wireless adaptors.

its always good to keep the firm ware on the router and card up to date for security reasons if nothing else. go to the manufacture's web site. most will have a downloads / software page search for your model number and look for firm ware updates. they will provide exact instructions depending on the model

Shrimps is correct. Use DHCP to auto-assign an IP address to your network card.

If you open a command box (often incorrectly called a DOS box) and type ipconfig one of the lines will say default gateway. Then type ping and the numbers and dots beside default gateway... ping 192.168.0.1 If your computer can 'see' the router it will respond to the ping command. If it can't there is another problem.

Might help if you say which OS you are using. XP should have no problem with the out of the box drivers supplied with most wireless network cards, but may have security protocol problems. If you're a Vista driver, there may be more fun and games ahead for you. Some of the older Belkin cards do not have the correct drivers for Vista and cannot use the correct security protocol to the Sky router. I'm falling foul of both of these problems on the computers at my house.

I will add here my oft-repeated rant that Sky lock their users out of their routers so you cannot change anything. It might be necessary to change the channel in use or switch off some security for use with older network cards. Rant over.

Check this.

Go to your controll panel and clink on network connections.

In here find your wireless network icon and right click it. Choose view available wireless networks. If you see your router than select connect. If it tells you that windows cannot configure this wireless connection then you have another program running that is trying to handel the connection.

DO THE FOLLOWING>

In the controll panel chose Adminastrative toolls and then open services.

In the list that has opened up look for Wireless Zero Config. Make sure it is on by double clicking it..I should say that the service has started. STOP IT.

Now close it out and look on the list for ANY thing else that sounds like it is a wireless connector. i.e say dell wireless or Toshibia wireless service.

STOP the other wireless service and then go turn on the Windows Wireless Zero Config.

NOW try to go back to your control panel and then to network connections. In the wireless icon right click and select view available networks. Try to connect to your router now.

It should work.

Would help more if you had your laptop type listed too.

After reading the other post, may I add that you should def listen to these suggestions as well. Assign the IP to the Card should help out.

ALSO, Sky LOCKS thier users out of the router? What a horrid and idoit inspired thing to do.

Did you try rebooting the router and your computer?

Did you make sure that whatever encryption you set for your wireless network is the same as the one your laptop is connecting with?

I had the same problem. You can't be to far away from the router. I have to have it about 5 feet away. Its the only way it will work. Sky will always blame your computer never there equipment. Plus they will never say the distance you can have your computer away from the router
