After a year, either would be fine.

You DO NOT "have" to give her either if she is still nursing a few times a day though.

Or she could also be getting calcium from other things like broccoli, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.

most containers of soy milk carry this disclaimer (or a similar one):

"not a substitute for infant formula"

my childrens' doctors have all reccomended whole milk to start after being weaned. even though i drink soy milk exclusively, i don't think all soy milk brands have the animal fats that a baby's brain and body need.

Personally I would give her organic soy milk as it won't contain the bovine growth hormones or antibiotics they put in the cows.

Plus cow's milk is for baby cows, not humans of any age, it's not designed for us to ingest really. It'll do in a pinch, but I don't consider it a healthy choice of beverage. Definitely soy milk.

The only person who could recommend what to do is your pediatrician. I would not take recommendation as to what to feed my kids from Yahoo answers or similar.......

For what its worth, and in contradiction to my own advise, my kids have had issues with lactose so they where pretty much fed on soy-milk (baby formula) until about 1 year old. After that we have given them whole milk until they turned 2. After that its been Skim milk.

Good luck.

You dont have to give her any other milk. As long as shes nursing frequently, shes getting the best thing possible from you.

Giving her other milk may decrease how much she nurses and as cow and soy milk arent as good for her as breastmilk, that would not be optimum.

Both are good. I give my daughter whole milk. She will not drink soy milk, guess she hates the taste.

You can give them to her, but she doesn't need them. Unless she grows hooves, four stomachs and starts mooing!-)

Mammals only ever need the milk of their mothers. Other milk is just a drink, like juice and should be given in moderation, if at all.

we use soy, oat and rice milks at our house, but not as a beverage, mostly just for cereal and coffee etc...

You CAN give her either. But my son is 13 months and I don't plan on giving him any other milk but my milk until he weans.

Both are fine.

Children don't need animal fats, they just need omega-3s. There are other non-animal sources.

Besides, if you're going to be nursing after a year your daughter doesn't really need either. She'll get all the fat that's god for brain development from you.

They both sound good. You can always see what her doctor has to say about it.
