it will make you better if you train properly. take a yard stick and make a line at the top (which is the height of the net)...then i would suggest making chalk or tape circles (12 -24 inches in diameter) in various spots and try aiming for those to build up accuracy.

as the other contributors put it plainly...playing with a wall will improve your game...as long as its properly marked to show the net line etc...

when i started playing...i was forced by my coach to hit against the wall for well over 3 months...it did build up my shot concentration and speed...and its also confirmed that the ball will return regardless where or how you hit it...

the only grouse would be that it is impossible to judge the depth of the ball...the wall will most certainly increase your preparation to make a shot time...it takes a lot less time for a shot made to a wall and against an opponent to return to you...hence you will have to be on your feet at all time and prepared to make the shot...

to practice on your timing...a wall would be the best trainer...and also volleys...stand closer towards the wall and take volleys...also builds up your arm strength...cos you hardly have time to put ur arm down.hahahha

i have been playing tennis for well over 10 years now...and i still use the wall to improve some shots...best partner so far...most reliable hahahhaha

My personal experience with practicing against a wall (with a measured net line marking) is that it helps in developing ground stroke technique, coordination, footwork and some shot consistency.

What it hurts is your perception of shot strength and how it relates to the depth of your shots.

Practice hard against a wall for 20 minutes...then go rally with a partner on the real court. You'll find that your heavier shots sail long/wide and you end up spraying the court for the next 10 minutes trying to regain your perception of the court's dimensions (all while fine tuning your shot strength and spin intensity).

From here, the worst thing you could do is become overly frustrated and lose your confidence.

It will make you better becuz you will train yourself to hit the ball earlier and that you will gain more of a reaction to the ball. Plus, you will be able to get to the ball without so much reaching unless the ball hit your opponent go deep.

As the above said, if you train properly - it helps a lot. Especially on volleys.
