I read somewhere that, in some cases, we are shipping old computers and such to China. They strip it of anything that can be recycled, and dump the rest into the river. China has lax pollution laws compared to the U.S., so we ship our problems over there.

...Due to lower environmental standards and working conditions in China, India, Kenya, and elsewhere, electronic waste is being sent to these countries for processing – in most cases illegally. Delhi and Bangalore in India and Guiyu in Shantou region of China have electronic waste processing areas. Uncontrolled burning, disassembly, and disposal are causing environmental and health problems, including occupational safety and health effects among those directly involved, due to the methods of processing the waste. Trade in electronic waste is controlled by the Basel Convention....

Beijing, International — Greenpeace and the Basel Action Network (BAN) have discovered that China's new thirst for steel and copper scrap to fuel booming infrastructural growth, is allowing significant quantities of highly polluting hazardous electronic waste to enter the country illegally. The forbidden toxic electronic waste is mixed in with the massive amounts of scrap imports now entering the country from Japan and South Korea....

...As much as 4,000 tonnes of toxic e-waste is discarded in the world every hour, equivalent to the weight of 1,000 elephants, the global environmental group said in a statement on Monday.
While there is no breakdown on how much of the global electronic waste ends up in China, Greenpeace said the country was a favorite dumping ground, with many of the world's electronic products being made there.
Although China has banned electronic waste from being imported, companies still export the waste there illegally while a lot more is generated domestically, said Greenpeace campaigner Yue Yihua.
"The proportion coming domestically is increasing but there is still waste coming from overseas," Yue said. ...

If you are a professional (say an engineer), you have an obligation to inform your supervisors of the situation. This should be done in writing. Leaking such matters to the press is actually unethical. You have the obligation to use the chain of command. By doing so in writing, you have also established the matter in writing, which serves as stronger evidence than anonymous speculation if worse comes to worse. Good luck, ethical quandaries can be tough.
