zig zag saw....the old 2 man saws the lumber jacks used to saw through trees....it was before chainsaws and the like...the sawing motion was repetitious and boring, thus putting people to sleep

I dont know, evern if i went back in time, and told that creater of "zzzs" in cartoons, and changed it to "mmms" the reasons would still be the same as the answers above me.

because while a person is going to sleep, they might just decide that they want to recite the alphabet, but when they get to the end, they are too tired to start over, so they just keep repeating the letter "z" until they fall asleep. You've never done that before?!? hehehe!
