The damage cicadas do to trees is all in the tips of branches or in the roots. As larvae, many suck tree sap out of roots underground at the base of the tree. As adults, cicadas damage the tips of branches when they lay their eggs into cuts they make in branches. You can easily see this damage after a couple days, as the last 6-12 inches of the branch will die- not nearly fatal damage but noticeable when leaves on the dead tip turn brown.
