1. What does the term melting pot mean?

It means putting people of various nationalities together. This applied more to early America when immigrants from Europe came. They usually lived in their own neighborhoods though and still do. People have a tendency to be with others who were raised like them. Same likes, dislikes, etc. A melting pot is what we actually have today in some ways. Nationalities have intermarried and had children of many nationalities and so time has produced the melting pot. It hasn't happened with the races. Hope I helped you out.

Melting pot was a term used to describe the US as the great melting pot because of the open door for immigration of several different ethnic groups in one country.

What the first 2 answerers say - except that the melting pot in USA is largely a myth - differing groups did not assimilate to become one large harmonious group.
