sonnet 11

As fast as thou shalt wane, so fast thou growest
In one of thine, from that which thou departest;
And that fresh blood which youngly thou bestowest
Thou mayst call thine when thou from youth convertest.
Herein lives wisdom, beauty and increase:
Without this, folly, age and cold decay:
If all were minded so, the times should cease
And threescore year would make the world away.
Let those whom Nature hath not made for store,
Harsh featureless and rude, barrenly perish:
Look, whom she best endow'd she gave the more;

sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owes

Summarize a sonnet? They are only 14 lines each! What should I do -- turn them into a Haiku?

OK -- OK

Sonnet 18 -- Life is short -- live fast or die young

Sonnet 12 -- You are better than the weather & that is a good thing.

Both Sonnets are talking about the passage from death to life and views of nature. The best way to summarize Shakespeare is to take each line and write it out what it is actually saying. Then taking that interpretation put the sonnet in your own words.

The message in both of them is the same: Shakespeare is basically saying that you should do your own homework. If you don't, you will never learn, and will be unprepared for real life. Good luck!
