It gives people of many countries a universal language to speak, and a forum for healthy competition.
And it gives people an excuse once every 4 years to travel to a foreign land, drink too much and sing loudly.

it is a sport that also improves relations, it creates a common ground between countries who have nothing in common. with this common ground new relations can be sought and worked out, when 2 countries with the worst relations play soccer, nothing matter but the game, the war or fight is on pause and everyone just watches the game, its the common language. The worlds most popular sport provides positive role models, positive outlets for children to spend their time. It is one of the most overlooked global unifier's. without soccer we would lose the common love of the game that brings us all together. sure people will say its not important but that's just their American snobbishness getting the best of them

I am a hand-sewn soccer ball maker and I know how it feels to watch as so many humans come together to release energy over a small ball of many colors. For the moment it does replace in a placebo sort of way the other expression which is usually war. So start there if you want to know about soccer's effect on society.
