My land lord is an evil man....no end to his henious ways. However, I'm moving very shortly. I'm considering the following: I'd like to line all of the streetpoles down my block with signs that say "Don't Rent 123 ***** Ave."
I'd like them to face away from the house on both sides, so that any prospective tenants would see a row of signs no matter which way they approached. I'm also considering asking the adjoining neighbor (who has a new 6 foot fence at the egde of the property) if I'd be able to post a sign on a pole about eight feet off the ground and about 8 feet inside his propety line, that says the same thing.
Before you ask: yes, I paid my rent on time, we're quiet, clean tenants, and I don't consider myself a troublemaker by nature. What are the legal ramifications of an act like this?

As I understand it, libel is the printing of false statements meant to harm another...I don't think this fits the bill, as it's my opinion.

If it's not saying anything false, then it can't be libel. However, you could be sued for tortious interference with prospective business relationships. Basically, this means that if you intend to prevent him from entering into a contract (which you clearly do) then he can sue you for any delay in finding a tenant your landlord caused. Also, as others said, it is likely against local ordinances to post such flyers without a permit. Finally, you should report your landlord to the local housing authority and/or better business bureau. That is the better way to go.And, if his "heinous" acts were against the law or in violation of local ordinances, you can (and should) file formal complaints.

The legal ramifications are potentially twofold:
1. Fines for posting signs on public or private property that isn't yours. If you have moved out, then you could possibly be prosecuted for trespassing, too.
2. Your landlord, arguably, could sue you for libel. I greatly doubt he would win the case, based on what you say here, but you never know.
There is probably a 50-50 chance that none of this would happen. The cops have better things to do than to worry about some signs that could easily be taken down by your landlord and tossed. Also, the landlord might be hesitant to take you to court for a libel case he might not win. So if you want to take a chance, the go for it!

Actually, as long as you are allowed to post signs, you'd be okay.
I know of a guy who bought a Chevy that turned out to be a lemon. the dealership would not fix it, take it back, etc. the guy bought the lot next to the dealership and put decals of lemons all over the truck. Also lettering that read, "If you want to buy a lemon, buy a Chevy from [name of dealership]." Dealership tried to sue, but was thrown out - freedom of speech. not libel based on that person's personal experience...

he could sue you for slander, defamation or actually libel which is a harmful statement especially writing but also a picture, sign or electronic broadcast. while what you are doing may make you feel better you are attacking him in a way. and you can get sued.

Posting messages on streetpoles is illegal in most cities. Unless that message is posted by the city / state. The idea won't work anyway. Will anyone believe a grown adult posted these signs ?

If he's that much of a jerk, he will find a way to sue you. Interference with his business, slander, etc.
