It depends on which city you're in.

In Miami, 10 avenue blocks =~ 1 mile
16 street blocks =~ 1 mile

It depends. In the US, generally, there are 20 blocks in a mile in the east, 16 in the midwest, and ten in the south and west.

The east was settled when the average person walked everywhere. By the time the midwest was settled, there were horse-driven streetcars. When the west was really built up, people had cars.

there is no standard block. It is simply the distance between two cross streets and it varies widely even in the same city.
