The Mayfair, Renaissance, Radisson, Omni, Sheraton (near 15th St) are all .< 2 blocks from the Metro Station. I would still recommend renting an economy sized car to get around because the metro system is still fairly new and doesn't really go to many of the sites, with the exception of those downtown. For example, the metro can take you to Forest Park where the Zoo, Art Museum, Muni Opera, History Museum are located, but the walk to the zoo from the station is at least a mile. The Science Center (great place to visit) is across from Forest Park, but at least a1.5 mi or more from the closest metro station.
My recommendation would be to either get a hotel in Clayton or Downtown. Metrolink could take you from the airport to one of the downtown hotels. You could use the metrolink to take you to the sites around downtown for a day or two. Then you can rent a car at one of the downtown facilities to do things like go to Forest Park, visit the brewery, Grant's Farm, or even drive out to Meramec Caverns, then drop of the car on your last day and take the Metro back out to the airport.

Metrolink starts at the Airport and goes all the way through downtown and into Illinois. I would sugget staying at a hotel near the Airport or downtown. Most anything inbetween is not near a hotel, or in a bad neighborhood. Downtown look for a hotel that is near Bush Stadium or the Scott Trade Center for there is a metrolink stop near there. The Adam's Mark is one, but expensive. I hope you enjoy your stay here and get to do all the fun things we have here. Don't forget Six Flags is only about 45 mins to an hour away!

Below is a travel site and the website that shows the route map. The travel site, most will list if they have decent proximity to Metorlink. Otherwise, you can compare the route map to listed location. If you want affordable "luxury", I recommend the Rennissance Downtown. It is a very nice hotel within a block or two of a metrolink stop. The Westin is right next to a stop, but the room price is higher.
Good luck

I am going to St. Louis this Friday and the metrolink comes fairly close to the Adams Mark...about 3 or 4 blocks I think. Seems like a very affordable way to travel!

Any of the hotels in downtown St. Louis will be close enough to the MetroLink for you. Personally, I recommend the Hyatt Regency at Union Station. It's adjacent to Union Station (shopping complex) and next door to the ScottTrade Center (where the Blues play) and you can hop on the MetroLink to get to Busch Stadium, the Arch, Forrest Park, and the Airport.

Stay out by the airport most definatly it will be a little cheaper on your budget as well as most of the hotels have shuttle that will take you to and from the metrolink station no walking , plus you can always count on being able to have a safe ride to your hotel, they dont always pick you up in downtown and some areas are not safe, just pick one that has a shuttle.
Try The st.louis Airport Hotel 314-427-5955 they have a shuttle to and from and pretty reasonable for the quality .

We've stayed a couple of times near the North Hanley station - lots of hotels (midrange and below) between there and the airport. If you want to go more upscale, there are lots of hotels downtown, and several in the Union Station area.
If you have a chain you like, search their website for Slu locations, and most will give you directions or a map to the nearest Metro site.
The Metrolink is very reasonable and convenient, and gets you most anywhere you want to go (although you'll need to transfer to a bus to get to the zoo).
Check out explorestlouis.com; they sometimes have good hotel deals there.
Have fun!

Go to VisitMo.com they should have all that info. The Drury downtown is close to the metrolink and a good hotel. There are several in that area that would be fine.

on it's route through downtown, it stops at Union Station...where you'll find the Hyatt Regency and the Drury Union Station. at the next stop at Scottrade Center, the Sheraton City Center is right across from the stop. the next stop, at Busch Stadium is right next to the Westin, and the Hilton at the Ballpark is just around the corner. There are hotels with in walking distance at every downtown stop after that up to the Laclede's Landing stop.
