You will need an undergraduate degree (preferably in a teachable subject) which will take you 3 years. They say you can apply after 2, I believe but I have never heard of anyone who got in. It is very hard to get in; you will likely need a B average in your degree. Many people have a 4 year (honours) degree before being accepted to teacher's college. Teacher's college is 1 year following which you will receive a Bachelor of Education degree. There are some programs where you study for your bachelor degree in a subject and your BEd at the same time. I believe these are completed in 4 years and I think Trent is one university which does this.
When I went to teacher's college (1990) the university had to recommend that you receive your teaching certificate. They could not stop you from getting a BEd if you passed all your coursework but if the teaching masters felt you would not make a good teacher they did not have to recommend you to get your certificate. That meant, of course, that you would never teach in a publicly funded school. It was not a common practice but it did happen to one girl in my class who they would not recommend for her teaching certificate.

The job market for teachers just now if quite poor. Only 50% of graduates are getting jobs and many people are working on the supply lists for 5 years or more.
