Read a couple of the prior responses, and you'll see exactly why the extension of basic family and individual rights to gays and lesbians is warranted. So many people are blissfully ignorant of the fact that withholding such rights is harming real people, and real families, simply for the sake of appearances. My partner and I pay in every penny as much in taxes and Social Security as a married couple, yet are entitled to none of the survivor benefits and legal protections; to suggest that we have the same rights now is just silly, since the only way I could receive such benefits and protections would be to enter into a sham marriage with a woman; is this the "sanctity of marriage" everyone's talking about? And, the person with the "marriage is about procreation" response is truly a moron; more than a million kids are currently being raised by gay parents in the U.S., many of whom are a heartbeat away from becoming orphans, thanks to cruel people like this, and I don't see any of the "marriage is about procreation" folks protesting to stop senior citizens from getting married. Oh, and the "you have to have rights first" argument is really rich; that's like saying women had no business complaining that they couldn't vote until 100 years ago, because they never had that right before, so nothing was being taken away from them. The entire Civil Rights movement wasn't about stopping someone from taking rights away- it was about finally enforcing the Constitutionally guaranteed rights that had previously been ignored by the Bible-toting ruling majority!

All people have rights...ie. all men are created equal..no exceptions!! you may be talking about the marital rights that are ,for now, denied gay couples. ther are NO good resaons for this denial. Some will quote scripture, some will say it is un-natural, but for the gay population I do not think they feel that way. I find it ironic that the works of many gay entertainment icons, artitst, authors are accepted and sometimes coveted by the mainstream "homo- haters" that say gay mairrage is an abomination and a sin against humanity.
I personally woudls ask how this subject is related to history unless you compair the treatment of the gay population with the treatment of slaves in America and the abuses forced upon the native americans by the government.

gee whizz
let me play devils advocate for a moment
laws and rules exist generally to reflect the morals of society at large i.e. the majority
thats how it works
pandering to minority groups only siezes up our law making process and takes the focus away from other issues

That gays do not have rights is an untruthful statement.
Under The United States of America's Constitution, gay men and gay woman ALREADY have ALL the rights as any other man or woman in The United States.
What gays are asking for are NEW rights.
Nothing has been taken away from gays.
You have to of had something first, before it can be taken away.

It's not that they should not have rights it's just that they should NOT have some of the((i only know on 2 ,but i'm sure there are more)) rights that they want. But i'll only focus on the marriage issue...why should homosexuals not be allowed to marry?? Because marriage is between one MAN and one WOMAN, not one MAN and one MAN ,or one WOMAN and one WOMAN, but one MAN and one WOMAN. America is the strongest country in the world because of her strong foundations. So why would we change from our strong foundations?? America's foundation is the Constitution which is based on God's Word, the Bible, ((and yes i'm about to quote scripture)) and God's Word says:
Genesis 2:24
"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh" << did it say "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his husband: and they shall be one flesh"??? NO!!!
Romans 1:24;26b-27
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
26b"...for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:"
27 "And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."
^^^God knew this would happen. Why not serve Him who knows the future??

Are you attending Pat Robertson University?
I don't see a single reason why gay people should not have (equal) rights.

Everyone should have rights. If your asking about marriage, and any "benefits" that go along with it, well the basic reason for marriage is to propgate and continue the species, so why should the rest of us extend the same privlidges to members of society who do not want to do that.
