I would suggest Knoppix to extract your files. For the most part it can read corrupted drives. It may be your best bet. Go to http://www.knoppix.org/ and download the ISO file and burn it to CD. Then set Bios to boot the CD and all that jazz. You should then be able to access the corrupted drive and burn all the files to a CD. Good luck.

That is common when hard drives go bad. It means that the table which keeps track of files has gone bad on the one partition. So it does not know where anything is located.
You can try a file recovery software or an undelete. Depending on WHY the table went bad, it may be able to recover some of the files. However, if the problem is with the master cylindar where the main directory is stored, it may not be able to write a new directory, and so not be able to recover the files.
If you can access the second parition, I strongly recommen you back up anything you need off it immediately. If the problem is mechanical, you could lose that second partition at any time.
Good luck....

Sounds like the partition table got lost.
There are some partition table recovery tools out there that may recover the partition structure and allow you to get to that portion of your drive. If not, then 3rd party companies like Drive Savers could get the data (although a-bit pricey)

Hi I'm a data recovery specialist, I'm willing to help you if you contact me via IM or e-mail. let me know how much data you have on the corrupt partition and I may be willing to do a one off free recovery for you
Be careful with third party utilities some write data back to the same disk they are recovering from which will render you're data useless.

If the partition information data or the physical disk in the partition is damaged it will not read. there are companies who will try to recover it but they charge $1000.00 and up, and then don't guarantee results.

There is a program called testdisk under GNU license that may help recover the partition. Try http://www.cgsecurity.org/
