it's a manual metronome, as opposed to the digital ones you see so commonly these days. i prefer the older wood ones for aesthetics, but the digital ones keep better time. metronomes click off beats per minute (bpm), and that needle or the face of the metronome should have edged numbers that indicate how beats per minute the metronome is clicking.
