Why is it that any cell phone can't work with any service, just as home telephones work, plus why does the graphic appearances change according to carrier???

When cell phones were analog, things were much simpler. However analog took up a lot of bandwidth and was not very efficient. That is why digital cellular was developed. Unfortunately there are competing technologies that are not compatible with each other.

Cingular/AT&T uses GSM, Verizon uses CDMA, I'm not sure what everyone else uses.
