It was installed a little over a year ago, car is fine, guy at auto shop checked it for me and said it was fine.

It was going off after dark at all different times at first, now it's going off once in awhile in the daytime.

I had suspected my literally crazy neighbor who does wierd things like talk to invisible people and bang on his car with a breadknife chanting things. Now I am not so sure.

All of you auto repair experts: what could be the problem?

Sensitivity adjustment may be set too high...take it back to the installer and have them adjust it.

Have you tried to get the alarm to sound yourself? This should give you an indication of what sets it off at night or even during the day. I had a friend who's cat would jump on the cars hood (because it was warm) each night when she got home. This set off the alarm so she had to set the sensitivity down were it no longer made the cat jump scratching the car every time.
I also know someone that had a vehicle those alarm would sound when a truck drove past. Was very annoying being his neighbor.

If it's going off for no reason, the guy at the auto shop was wrong, go find someone who has a clue.

I would think a sensor is being a bit too sensitive.
