Honestly, I don't know waht you mean by that, and I am a portuguese living in Portugal... Historical events, we have thousands since our history is so big (900 year old country). But there are a few that are comemorated with hollidays, maybe that's what you want? 5 of October 1910, end of the monarchy beginning of the republic, 25 of April 1974, revolution of the carnations, the bloodless revolution that overthrowed the 50 year old fascist dictatorship, many others that you can look up in the countrie's website.
Regarding what someone said about a major fire, he probably meant the giant earthquake and consequent tsunami that hit Lisbon in 1755 destroying much of the old medieval Lisbon, but that didn't slowed down Lisbon, on the contrary, the rebuilding process was a revolutionary one especially in the anti-seismic buildings that were invented then.

The last major fire in Lisbon. It reduced it from a position of power and world influence to a mere city on the coast.
Look it up.
