separate garbage for recycling
reuse a lot of containers products come in
once in a while I think up new things to make with garbage (look at the book readymades for some great examples what you can do if you are looking for inspiration)
take my own shopping bags for shopping
I start to try buying more local produce, though to be honest, it's mainly because I think it tastes better
I use my bike much more than my car
I buy a lot of things I need at the thriftstore and whatever is still useable goes back there if I don't need it any more
I volunteer once in a while
I grow my own herbs and flowers, though I am not sure how good it's for the environment. At times it seems to use a lot of water.
support my local libraries.
don't leave lamps etc on when I leave or when I don't use them
in summer I dry my clothes on the clothesline instead of using a dryer.
I don't use the elevator if it's just a few floors (though more than 3 up I usually do)
I guess it's mainly a lot of small things, which I hope will add up.

not much. i would recycle more, but here you have to put recyclable stuff in these special bags the council provides, but they only give you some every 6 months or so, and they last about 3 weeks. As you can't buy them in the shops, most of the time everything goes in the normal bin.

However, we are very food consious, and we grow loads of our own food, and do the whole composting thing. However, we do fly a lot, and use the cars a lot, so i guess that cancels it out. I think that businesses and industry need to do more, however, as they are the main contributors. And if people can get away with being environmentally unconsious at work, they aren't going to bother at home. THere are no incentives to recycle, or to use public transport, as the council does little to help, it is expensive to get on the bus/train, and it's currently easier to do nothing. Until that changes, people's attitudes and actions won't change.

At home I recycle everything that I can. I try to use products until they are useless instead of constantly upgrading. Taking care of what I buy so that they will last longer. I try to drive as fuel efficiently as possible by not accelerating and breaking too fast.

I also try to educate myself with as much information as possible. I'm part of the Earth Sustainability program at Virginia Tech and also participate in the VT Environmental Coalition. I am minoring in Humanities, Science, and Environment at VT along with a minor in History and a major in Biology to be more well rounded. The group participates in programs like the Campus Climate Challenge who try to reduce campus environmental impacts. I attended the Youth Energy Summit last fall and joined my fellow youth environmentalists to find solutions and push our universities to be greener. With the VT Environmental Coalition we also with with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.

I'm also a member of the local Sierra Club chapter. When environment and politics mash I try to vote for the right politicians are influence current politicians. Sending letters, emails, and faxes can help in supporting goals. Did this recently showing my disgust with a Virginia bill calling for more coal power plants. I make sure my peers also know what is going on and try to get them to help as well. Spreading the word around is the most important thing to make sure we keep our planet in good shape for the future generations.
