I tried connecting, but it keeps trying to make me connect to a dial-up connection. I have a valid broadband account with my ISP, so there is not a problem there because I can connect to the internet with my Desktop PC.

You need a broadband modem to connect to DSL or Cable, etc. You need a "Dial up" modem for dial up. They are very different. To start, A broadband modem translates a digital signal whereas a dial up modem works with analogue signals. If you wish to connect your laptop to your broadband using a hard wire, you will need to use a router or a switch in between your broadband modem and your computers. This will allow you to connect as many machines as the router/switch has ports.

A 56k modem purely is the modem put in in computers that permit you to apply the previous dial up way of connecting to the internet. maximum all computers contain the 56k Modem pre-put in on them. those days very few purchasers % the previous dial up connections, yet somewhat use DSL or CABLE which demands an Ethernet Card to be put in on the pc and hence makes it possible for a lots swifter and extra up as much as now technologies.

You need either a dsl modem, your isp may provide one free, or a router, this is the best option. You ordinary modem only dials a telephone connection to the analogue side of the line.
