It's Venus.
Additional: Let's all give a big round of applause to whoever gave all the "Venus" answers a thumbs down. You know who you are, ya freaking moron...

Saturday night Venus was "optically" close to the moon. But in the grand scheme of things Venus was actually very far behind the moon. When two objects in the sky move along the same line of sight it's called and ocultation.

It's the planet Venus. And here's a cool way you can tell whether you're looking at a planet or a star: if it twinkles, it's a star. If not, it's a planet.

To add: A simple way to tell is if it twinkles. Stars, obviously twinkle just like the song says. Planets will be a solid brightness. Since it is red and not twinkling it must be Mars.
