Usually this is caused because a computer is "swap filling". That means that it does not have enough RAM and is being forced to convert a part of the hard drive in virtual RAM. Since the hard drive works so much slower then actual RAM, the whole system slows down. The cure, of coarse, is to add RAM.

XP likes to have a minimum of about 1 gig or 1024 megs. I like to run at least 2 gigs.

It could be a number of things.
Spyware, virus, malware
Hardware - memory, or video card went bad.

First try to scan your computer with ad-aware or spybot. You can download these for free at download.com. Then do a disk clean up, defrag, and run the anti virus. See that helps.
