Is there a test to prove you are at the start of the menopause? Didn't know there was one and if so, what are they testing for? My periods were very erratic, maybe one every 2-3 months, for about a year, then a continuous flow for 2 months solid, then nothing for 6 months. Then a flow SO heavy (like the Hoover dam had burst), for 3 days, then nothing. I didn't suffer from night or day sweats, so everyone is different. Doctors are very reluctant to issue drugs to control it and prefer to wait until it has been 2 years from the start. You could always try a second opinion to get a more balanced view. There are some excellent forums on the internet on the subject.

Menopause can start anytime, the average is around 50 years.
I take Black Cohosh and Soy Bioflavinoids (an herbal tablet) that helps me with the hot flashes, mood swings, and irregular periods.
Or you could be experiencing a sensitivity to certain foods (I have a friend that gets night sweats when she eats too much dairy). It could also be a vitamin deficiency - a good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement may help (you could probably use the vitamins anyway, most women don't get enough essential nutrients in their diet).

You should consider changing your doctor. This is a time when you need more support, not to be turned away. There are plenty of books on the subject of the menopause and lots of herbal alternative remedies that have already been mentioned. Good luck!

Are you still having your periods? If not anymore, you are having a menopause (officially).

Figs, soy and gingseng have a small amount of fito estrogens, if you eat them daily, may make you feel better.
