For school I have to put in top events between 1500-2007 and I want to put in the first car. I can't seem to get a straight answer about what and when that was though. Should I narrow it down to a certain type of car or what? And if so what type?

The Wikipedia page quotes from a 1967 book by Ralph Stein, saying that "The German Karl Benz is generally credited with the invention of the modern automobile", and that he was issued with a patent for it in 1886.

There had been various earlier self-propelled vehicles with unconventional engines, but they led nowhere. It was Benz's car that led to the whole modern automobile industry.

Depends on what you mean by "car."
There were stem-driven carriages that poked along at 3 mph with a driving range of 100 yards or so in the very early 19th century.
Among the very first internal combustion vehicles was a car by Karl Benz in 1886. Gottleib Daimler puta motor on a horse carriage somewhat earlier. Together, these guys formed Mercedes-Benz (Mercedes being Karl's daughter).

Ferdinand Verbiest, a Flemish Jesuit missionary in China, may have built the first steam powered car around 1672. Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot successfully demonstrated such a vehicle on a real scale as early as 1769 in France.

First effective mass produced car that actualy "worked well" was Henry Ford's model T. But before that there were numerous cars, just do some research.

just put ford and don't call it the 1st car, call it the first ford.
