A DVR without a monthly fee, inexpensive, which records in HD (at least 720p) and let's you transfer those recorded shows to your home PC through a LAN or something.

Take a PC
Add a TV tuner
Get a decent video card (maybe with DVI out)
Add Microsoft Media OS (or Vista Premium)
and you have a PVR. Microsoft provides the TV guide; some entertainment PCs do come with a remote as well.
