My 98 Civic, auto transmission, shifts into neutral while I'm driving for unknown reasons and the dealer says it's normal. On this model it is not necessary to push in the button on the side of the shift lever to go from drive to neutral or back again. Do you have this problem with the newer model Civics? I was thinking of buying a new Civic but don't like this problem.

There are two questions in your question. First, the ability to move the gearshift lever from "D" into "N" while driving without pushing the button in is the way almost every car is designed. You will be able to do that on any car that you drive (as far as I know).

The other question is 'should it do it when driving down the road?' and the answer is unless someone or something physically knocks the gearshift lever forward, the answer is 'NO'--it should not do it by itself. If the gearshift lever is 'popping' out of drive without someone or something touching the gearshift lever then you have something else causing it to do so. Moreoften than not, that something else is a broken motor mount, a broken transmission mount or a misadjusted shift cable. Given the age of the vehicle, I would strongly suspect that you have at least one broken motor mount that is allowing the engine or transmission to move excessively and to pull the gearshift lever out of drive and into neutral.

If you just asked about the condtion and phrased the question in terms of being able to move the gearshift out of drive and the dealer said that was normal, then they are correct. If they did not inspect the motor mounts and the transmission mount or check the adjustment of the shift cable, then you should have them do so.

hope that answers your questions

That had already been broken into and stolen in the previous. there is not any different reason for the swap being broken out, allowing the ignition cylinder to be became via a screwdriver. All Civics 2001 and later require a transponder key, so the 300 and sixty 5 days had to be 2000 or until now.

To go from drive to neutral in any car without hitting the button is normal.

All Hondas are like this. Luckily you have to hit the button and push stick to get it into reverse! Yeah, just the slightest bumping will knock my accords into neutral. Selavie!
