I have old athlon xp 2500 barton. i have eide WD 8mb cache drives.

I usally surf alot. A LOT OF BIT TORRENT and occational gaming.

I'm thinking of moving up to Intel E6600 or so.

I'm not familer with performance difference between EIDE VS SATA ( real world)
SATA 1.5 vs SATA 3.0
Sata vs Sata raid.

THANK YOU FOR YOU HELP.

SATA 1.5 give a theoretical 150 Mb/s throughput.
SATA 3.0 gives 300 Mb/s.

Is data transfer speed important to you?

RAID comes in different flavors:
RAID 0 stripes the data across multiple drives. Faster access, doubles throughput, if either hard drive fails all your data is hosed. storage capacity = drive size * # drives

RAID 1 mirrors the data across multiple drives. Data speed and access time is the same as normal, but if a hard drive fails the backup is right there and totally current. Storage capacity = drive size / 2 (you need an even number of drives)

RAID 5 needs at least 3 drives. It does a combination of mirroring and striping such that you get faster access times and redundancy. Storage capacity = drive size * # of drives -1.

RAID 5 IMHO is the best option, but most cheap controllers do not support it.

you like to run the drives as JBOD or purely raid the two X160s as you won't be able to raid mis matched drives so the 5 hundred heavily isn't known RAID 0 think of one hundred % loss of archives in force failure evaluate raid a million or 0+a million, you may no longer raid ide to sata

It helps quite a bit for installing and then loading large programs. Normal internet surfing and everyday tasks like word processing etc you wont notice much of a difference.
