A shoulder for him to lean on. Flowers are for the funeral. Support, understanding, phone# that he can call any time day or night to talk. That's what he needs more than anything.

If you and this guy has been friends for a while you know what makes him feel better when he is sad. Although having a parent pass is not easy get him something that would help him remember his father or even something that you and him share. I would get him a bottle of liquor-not implying that he drink his sadness away but maybe you two could hang out and reminisce.
But then again you know him the best and you want him to know that it's something you put some thought into. Good Luck

Flowers are quite generic and not especially for women. You could ask the florest for a basket of some kind. You should definitely send him a sympathy card and offer to help in any way you can see he needs it for the time being. Just being a friend and being there will be so much appreciated.
If your friend's father was a gardener, you could also plant a tree in his honor.
If your friend is of the Catholic faith, you could also send him a Mass Card. Contact any rectory locally; the cost is reasonable and his father will be remembered during the Mass.

For sure a card.

If you want to do more, than make charitable contribution in his father's name. It's common for the family to request charitable donations in the name of the deceased be given to a particular charity - such as American Heart Association, American Cancer Society etc...

I am a guy, and i'd have to say, that honestly, I'd want to be with someone so I could let it all out. If you are great friends, then that makes it easier, let him know that you are there for him and will be if he ever needs you.
(i assume you're a girl)
