Hi. The clicking is the read/write head moving into position. You can minimize this by defragmenting your drive. This allows the files to be read with a minimum of positioning moves. Some drives are quieter than others so hard to tell if you have a problem developing. Just do regular backups and you should not get into trouble.

As for the clicking noise: It isn't always going to die if clicking. Keep in mind I am on windows 7. I play games and when I first got my new laptop there was a slight clicking. It is a g6 hp laptop. I had to adjust my minimal cpu speed up a small amount so it wouldn't idle down so often when I wasn't playing games. I only adjusted it to 52% (1000mhz instead of the 800 it was on). Granted it will be different in each laptop. I recommend a cooling pad or stand to put your laptop on if you put the speed up a bit. Mostly though if you play full screen games, games not on browser, or games that run your fan harder. My option was right clicking my background on the desktop area, I clicked AMD Vision Engine Control Center. The cpu settings was in there. You can also try changing the power settings to be for performance instead of quality. The settings can also be found in each windows: in Start, then Control panel, and power. It may look different for xp. If you are not sure about how to go about it all, it is at least worth looking into before you buy something completely new.

I've had various brands of hard drives over the years, and a few of them made sounds similar to what you describe when accessing data. Also bear in mind that some laptops will make less noise that way, based upon where in the case the drive is mounted.

Stop using the drive. Your drive has suffered a head crash. The more you try to power up the drive the more likely you will damage the platters. This is a physical problem. No software is going to fix it. I've use this company a few times in the past and they were able to save my data.

That is usually normal with hitachis. Hitachis are usually cheap hard drives. You probably have an acer laptop.

back up all your files, because your hard drive might crash soon.
Ive been a tech for 5 years. With my experience I can say with confidence that hitachi is one of the worst hard drives out there.

Back it up.

Some drives are louder than others and I have seen some that click, though I am not very familiar with hitachi drives my self.

depends, if you are getting lots of errors then thats an imminent failure warning, i reccomend checking the S.M.A.R.T status with a S.M.A.R.T status checking utility,

if that shows verified smart status then you just have a loud drive.

Hit it with a hammer twice, then kiss a frog. That should fix it.
