It sounds like the movie "Jeremiah Johnson". The actual story is different than that which you describe - you might want to rent the movie and check it out again.

I remember this one. The title of the movie is the name of the character. Something like "Jeremy Johnson" (Jedediah Johnson? Jerimiah ?) Can't quite remember, but I think the johnson part is right
