the leaders of the taliban and osama bin laden were/are partners of a sort...they allowed his organization, al-qaeda, to train in afghanistan, supported and approved of its agenda, and continue to provide safe haven for its members.

That is false. The Taliban wasn't centered until 1996, after the bloodless conflict ended. Al Qaeda is predominantly an Arab-run institution, despite the fact that many non-Arab Muslims are part of Al Qaeda. The Taliban is an Afghan & Pakistani group. Each Al Qaeda & the Taliban are allied with every different. The Taliban is predominantly regional, and focuses on regional considerations in Afghanistan & Pakistan. Al Qaeda is world, and assaults pursuits global. Except for the Pakistani Taliban being concerned in the occasions rectangular bombing attempt, which used to be not a regional interest. We supported jihadist warring parties in Afghanistan in opposition to the Soviets in the 1980's - both Arabs & Afghans - who later grew to become Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

The Taliban and Al Queda were / are sunni muslim groups. That they both seek a very orthodox form of Islam is their primary common ground. The Taliban came, in part, from the freedom fighters or mujahadeen organized by osama bin laden in the war against the soviets in the 1980's. The group that was funded by the CIA became what we know as the Northern Alliance.
The Taliban offered safe haven for the Al Queda camps and protection for Osama - especially after 9/11. . .

They are both radical fundamentalist groups. The Taliban were the government of Afghanistan that welcomed Bin-Laden and Al Qaeda in their country to build terrorist training grounds and camps from which to export their terror activities. That is they were, until Bush chased them and Al Qaeda into the mountains along the border with Pakistan.

The Taliban originated in Afghanistan as a fundamental Sunni Muslim radical group. Al-Queda originated from a collective of terrorists from around the world, not much more than mercenaries, until our current Secretary of Defence, Gates and the U.S. C.I.A. funded them, organized them and trained them to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. We used them as "terrorists-for-hire" at least up through 1999 in Bosnia. Haliburton had the contracts to build their training camps. Osama came later. Read Gate's memoirs. The two groups resemble each other in their Muslim commonality and neolithic tribal/feudal level of cultural development and conceptualization of politics.
