My daughter had a few bouts of what doctors called "colic" when she was about 6 weeks old. My in laws seemed to believe that this was all due to a condition that their culture (hispanic) calls "OJO"
Apparently a baby (or adult for that matter) gets this when someone looks at her admirably and does not touch her. (?) They then give her this evil eye that causes her severe pain that makes her scream bloody murder. Then my mother-in-law comes over with an EGG and rubs it all over my daughter and cracks it into a glass of water. Somehow, by cracking that egg in the glass she is able to determine if she has ojo or not, which she strangely does everytime that egg gets cracked.
No offense, but this all sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me. Does anyone think differently or know of any scientifc reasons as to why this would be true at all?
We get into about this a lot. She doesn't do it to her anymore, but I'm still curious.

old country medicine, let her know that you appreciate her help, but you feel that the dr will know whats best. Be careful, she will probably have lots of out dated, possibley dangerous, advice for how to feed, bathe, comfort and raise your child.

Babies do respond to the energy around them. If the adults are calm, the baby will be calm and vise versa.

It just sounds like your baby was being a baby though. Sometimes when babies are upset it's harder to tell what they need than other times.

However, the remedy with the egg is a bit freaky if you're not totally intergrated into that culture. Makes an awesome story to tell people though, quite amusing to imagine what my reactionw ould be if a family member was doing this to my baby.

It's all a bunch of crap. I'm hispanic and I grew up in south texas and our curandera rubbed an egg on me once before I threw her out of the house. Lots of people still believe that "ojo" exists, but it's just like any other kind of voodoo, it can exist if you truly believe that it does. Most importantly it's dangerous to handle raw eggs due to the salmonella.
