I think the South Shore is much nicer than the North Shore by far. Its much more scenic and pleasant than the North Shore where you have cities like Lynn and stuff that are ugly to me.

I live in the Metrowest so I feel like I can be unbiased here. North Shore has amazing beaches, and in general is more affluent. South Shore does get less snow, better access to cities like NYC, Providence etc... Some good shopping, if I had to pick I'd say North Shore. Just gorgeous with amazing views of the city.

I live in Metrowest and I find it better than both the North & South shores. That being said, if I had to pick one of your choices, I would choose the south shore as they have a tendency to get less snow.

For what? For beaches I'd definately give the nod to the North Shore. For living....hmmmm depends how far out of Boston you are willing to be. South is probably nicer closer in, North farther out. To me once you get past Salem the towns get very lovely. I would have moved there had it not been so far away from Boston, not to mention many towns close to Boston where most of my friends are. I chose MetroWest too...so maybe you are eliminating a good locale.
Now the towns I'd want to live in, like Manchester by the Sea are pretty untouchable, unless I hit the lottery. Then again my main reason for wanting to live there is a residents beach season pass, so if I hit the lottery I could afford to park!
So anything specific you are asking/looking for?

I have lived in the South Shore my entire life and there's no way I'd ever leave. I love it here. Just south you'll find Quincy, which has nice and not-so-nice areas, but overall it's a great city to live in and so close and convenient to Boston... just hop on the red line on the T and you can be in downtown in 20 minutes. Go just a little further south andyou have some GORGEOUS sea-side towns (Hingham, Scituate, Cohasset, Marshfield).

I prefer South Shore. Homes are nicer, there's more space (at least if you are closer to Boston). Northwest of Boston is very nice though.

North Shore. There is much, much, MUCH more variety of everything.
