B

The answer isn't so simple, and some have argued that the massacre at Wounded Knee in part happened because the dancers wore "ghost shirts" they thought would make them invincible to bullets -- but the most generally correct answer is probably B, since the "ghost" or "spirit" dance was generally about reuniting the living and the dead, uniting with ancestors.

The popularity of the practice in the late 1800s was less because of a ceremonial tradition and more the result of the teachings of one man.

Wikipedia has a decent summary of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Dance

(out of curiousity: wouldn't it be just as easy to do a quick internet search, or even just a wikipedia search, than to type out the whole question?)

The answers are A, B, and D.

Added: Wovoka, a Paiute medicine man, had traveled among the plains' tribes and shared his vision with them that the buffalo would return in huge numbers, the ancestors gone before would also return, and when wearing special Ghost Dance deerskin shirts, the wearer would be impervious to bullet and knife.

Of course we know better because the cavalry became extremely nervous over the dancing thinking that an uprising was on the horizon. The Army quelled the dancing by subduing the Indians with gunfire and cannon.
