The school where I teach has open campus because the cafeteria is not large enough to seat everyone and they didn't want to have to schedule two different lunch periods (the high school and junior high share the cafeteria, so that would make at least 3 different lunch shifts).

As a teacher, I don't like open campus because students come into class late or carrying their food because they didn't have time to eat during lunch. The class I have after lunch has 31 students in a room that was only built for about 25. Add in the 44-ounce sodas that they all had during lunch, and it makes things interesting (and not in a good way).

I think open campus at lunch is asking for trouble. Students are in a hurry and therefore are more likely to drive dangerously. It also puts a burden on the restaurants in town to get that many students fed in that short a time. The only pros I can think of for open campus are that students have more options of what to eat and that the school cafeteria does not have to feed all of them every day.

Open Campus Pros And Cons

Iknow that Carl Albert closed their campus.
Because some students had taken their cars to subway or some fast food place and on the way back they were goofing around throwing ice at each other from two different cars, there was an accident and several students died. That's why they closed the campus. Some high schoolers are not responsible enough to be safe when going to/from lunch. The school did not want that responsiblity. They closed the campus. I have to support it.

pro: you don't have to eat prison slop con: school isn't responsible for incidents that happen (car crash, rape, murder, whatev) so they won't pay for medical bills or lawyers to help you sue somebody.
