Looks like you pretty much summed up all the causes. The only things that i can think of for effects is:

There was no more questioning about whether the union was a voluntary one; it was now law.

We were now committed to an economy based on machines not human muscle.

And there was universal sufferage for all adult males.

Slavery is to the American Civil War as weapons of mass destruction are to the current war in Iraq.

The true causes of the Civil War were that the southern states had more economic and political power than the northern states. Where slavery enters into this is that the slaves were taken into account in the census and even though they had no political rights their numbers in the population influenced the number of representatives slave states sent to congress.

The Civil War was between different ways of life and different economic systems. the northern states were mainly commercial-industrial oriented and the southern states were mainly agricultural.

The south had power and money, the north didn't and were jealous. In the end the north won; a sign of the times that everywhere agriculturalism would cede to industrialism. And it is a good thing that the north won. Otherwise the CSA, if it still existed as a country, would be like a third world country.

One of the worst things about the outcome of the Civil War was the north's continued abuse of southerners even after the conflict. Northern policies caused the growth and spread of black-white racism.

I am sick and tired of the propagation of the lie that the Civil War was a noble cause to put an end to slavery. The northern politicians and military officers couldn't care less for the plight of blacks.

Ah well, history books are always written to reflect the official views of the winners.

The major causes of the war were not just slavery. In fact the southern states were having trouble with poverty and feeling left out of the loop, while the North was enjoying good economic times and an industrial build up. The west was rapidly expanding and Washington had there eyes on the North and the West. The south was look at as meerly agricultural and un-important. When Abraham Lincoln took office, it was obvious that he was going to push an anti slavery agenda, and the south felt that the conditions had become intolerable for them. So, they intentionally attacked Fort Sumptner in South Carolina to start the war and left the union. I believe that it proved that diplomacy from Washington to the Southern states could have solved this problem before we had a horible war. In the end, the Union was reaffirmed and the Federal government proved to be the superior arm of government. However, I believe the southern states proved to be important to the union and showed that each state had to be listened to in Washington. There were good things that came out of the war. An end to slavery, reaffirmation of states rights and the south finally got the needed attention during reconstruction.

I agree with The Law (above). It was pure and simple economics. The north was industrializing, and the south couldn't keep up even with the free labor of slavery. When the north wanted to get rid of slavery, it was a real slap in the face, because that would make the south even poorer. You know, never mind the ethics of slavery.

Another geographic cause is that the northern states saw themselves as an interdependant union under one set of federal rules. The southern states were larger and more far-flung, so they followed state law and had no use for a federal gov't.
