All my high school gym teachers were overweight as well. One was probably 250 pounds overweight. I don't think that those doing the hiring are legally able to discriminate based on body type, but in my opinion, it is important for a gym teacher to model what they are teaching (health usually). Even if they are just teaching PE, they should be able to model the correct form or plays for certain sports, which they can't do if they are grossly overweight.
Like I said, in an ideal world, gym teachers would be athletic, healthy individuals that the kids could look up to. In the real world, it seems that people get a physical education degree because its "easy" and they don't necessarily care about their health, or teaching it.

A coach is there to teach you how to do a sport. The coach does not need to DO the sport- she just needs to know how to teach it and supervise the team... maybe she's old or had an injury, right?
But a physical education teacher who's fat? That would be bad! They are supposed to be teaching you how to keep yourself healthy. How can anyone place any faith in their teachings if the teacher herself doesnt even follow them. Obviously if a phys ed teacher thought that being in shape was important, then they would be in good shape!

I don't think your gym teacher NEEDS to be in shape, because even though they may not take very good care of their body or put their health first, it doesn't mean they don't know how and you can probably learn a lot from them since they experienced the negatives of neglecting your health first-hand. When it comes to demonstrating physical activities in your gym class, sure, a non athletic gym teacher may not be the best, but it all depends. If you get benefits from your gym class and tips to keep yourself healthy, then no, it doesn't matter if your gym teacher follows his own rules for health.

Although that contradicts their teaching field, I had a gym teacher who was overweight and I felt more confident in gym class because she had the same feelings that us fat girls do. We cannot run fast. We arent good at most sports. She respected that.

it helps to be in shape when teaching gym especially if you are teaching teens!
When the school hires teachers that cannot discriminate because of their weight, it is against the law!

i think of they could maximum of my PE (well being midsection) teaches are extra healthful and in sturdy shape in spite of the actuality that there is one that is obese and in my 3 years in being at this college, I even have under no circumstances considered her habit a PE lesson - even however thats what she is employed to do. each and every time I see her she is in her workplace doing not something. (has an workplace because of the fact she is the top of twelve months 8) I had her for a 0.5 term of PE instructions (approximately 8 instructions over the term) and we had a grant each time
