The king has clothes - he just doesn't wear them all the time.

Agreed - a regular feed looks awful on a high-def TV, especially one with pixels (plasma & LCD) vs. scan lines (tube CRT). But a high-def TV with a high-def feed looks extremely nice.

But there is an exception, the HD compression schemes used are designed for complex moving images. They show artifacts on flat images, like hand-drawn animations even with a high-def feed.

yeah I agree that some seem to just distort the screen....
