If anyone knew the answer to that maybe it would be a better place...however we can't control others actions, but we can do our part in the small things we do. Smile at a stranger, hold a door open, pick up something that fell to the floor in the store, you know, the small things and maybe the one person you did something small for will turn around and do something nice for another.....it's the Small things that count and hopefully will grow...:o)

I think the problem you will find is not that humans don't want what is best for mankind, but the definition of what is best and/or how it should be achieved.

Some people think goodness would come with anarchy. Some feel that dictatorships are the only way. Some feel that the removal of certain groups would help, while others feel that there aren't enough that belong to a certain group.

Dictators rarely act the way they do out of a need to feel "evil". They usually have some ideas about what needs to be done, even though drastic measures may have to be taken.

conflict of interests!
Religion is a conflict of interest. some religions say to keep things simple, don't wear flashy clothing, don't buy things you don't need.... democracy... says otherwise! BUY MORE, consume more, drive everywhere, fast food, use it then throw it away! Wasting resources makes profit.
Consuming only what you need will reserve your resources.
(I suppose this why so many people out in the REAL World, dislike the United States; waste resources, consume/use up all nat. resources, pollute our resources. Versus resourcefulness)

Wars are caused because, some nations have control of certain resources. If its Oil, or 100 years ago, it was LAND.
Today... its more about PEOPLE.
Everyone wants to be like the US.
Everyone wants a nice big car. Big house. Big TV.
Closet full of shoes. The conflict will be trade! Who will have the rights to sell things to the developing world. Who will make the profits in the next 25 years? AMericans? Chinese? East Indians?

Come on man. Because a huge percentage of humans are interested in the good of only one member of "mankind". It's called human nature.

Greed. The love of money. It's called the 'survival of the fittest' which includes taking advantage of everyone and everything and collecting as much wealth as possible.
When you're working to make yourself as rich as possible, all other things are pretty much ignored. This applies to individuals, groups and countries of the world.
This phenomenon starts with childhood and continues until an individual is essentially enlightened to the fact that civility, humanity and charity is FAR more important and satisfying than hedonism and wealth.

Because people are greedy and don't want the good of all mankind, they want the good for themselves...all of it, which means no one else can have any...so they say

"whatever, forget them, who cares if there are starving children in the wealthiest country in the world, as long as I can have my gold-plated helicopter for my million dollar shopping sprees..."

People are ignorant and greedy, and who is supposed to dictate what is the good of all mankind? Its like if everyone got what they wanted, the world would implode...what if two people want the same thing, but they both want only themselves to have it...it wouldn't work.

I think we should try to improve things...but can't you admit that this would be a pretty boring life if everything was sunshine and rainbows... Seriously, we need a bit of chaos so we can have some adventures.

well, that is an obvious answer, the better question would be why dont people do things for their own good that would also help others. I see people taking the easy way and making a few bucks for themselves when with a little work they could make much more money and do good for all.

Because humans are inherently selfish and self-serving. If put in the position, for instance, where you had to choose whether to take posession of something you have wanted, or to give it away to someone who was more needy, but that you didn't really know, what would you do? Most people would say that they would give it away, although if in giving it away it took something from you the answer is primarily the reverse.

Because there's too many greedy humans out there. Part of the reason why we're suffering from Global Warming is because of greed. Humans are using up all of the earth's natural resources. What a bright future ahead of us. *sigh*

Who gets to decide what is "good" for ALL of mankind?

See the problem?
