Every human being at any given point of time lives two lives... one on the physical manifested plane as a human being and the other as our soul atman within... the world of spirits. The physical manifested life is governed by the five senses whereas the control of the soul atman within lays with the mental world... our thinking prowess!

Every human being is the sum total of all his thoughts at a given point of time. The difference between a laborer and a king is the difference in their thinking prowess. On the physical manifested plane both bear the same qualities... the same aspects of life! On the mental plane... the variation is phenomenal! It just cannot be compared.

The physical manifested life... the body is ephemeral in nature! It has an earthly sojourn of 70 to 80 years of life. Our soul... the atman within has a single life span of 96.4 million earthly years... a cosmic life cycle of 8.4 million manifestations! It is our soul atman within that has manifested the body for the purpose of cleansing itself from within. All the dross removed... the soul atman regains its original pristine pure form and goes back to the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism).

It is the mental prowess that makes one... a normal human being reach the level of Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or prophet Mohammed! The power of discrimination... the mental prowess is what differentiates human beings from animals! Devoid of mental prowess... human being is no better than an animal. This we observe in normal life at times... when human being loses control of self! More on Mind - http://www.godrealized.org/mind_a_universal_phenomenon.html

Our physical being is the condition for the possibility of our consciousness, therefore our understanding of both seems to always lead one to the other. The distinction we offer between the two is an intellectual strategy that helps us to think about the different ends toward which thinking and physicality are often directed. However, I think that our tendency to differentiate between the physical and mental is due to the mysterious capacity of our mind to discern immaterial concepts and substances. This seems to link our minds to a reality that is beyond the material, a reality that is often believed to position the physical dimenstion of human existence.

There are obvious differences Physical refers to all things to do with the body and Mental refers to the thinking parts of the brain & the emotions The medical field treats each as separate. Its fine by me.

An example: If you were a quadraplegic- paralyzed from the neck down- the processes of your mind would be the mental effect and the primary way of communicating. But...... we are affected physically by the workings of our mind. Fear and attraction both increase heart rate, adrenaline surge to name a few effects.
I think they are connected and chemical responses occur that create how our physical bodies and mental processes act, react, and feel.

we don't need to differentiate physical and mental if we know they are different. But we need to differentiate them if we are confused. Life is a combination of physical and mental. If one is missing, life will no longer exist. What I mean is they are just interdependent to each others.

We differentiate b/w the two because..these are in our senses 2 diff things...for physical we have proofs, theories n all...however mental-- we only know it exists...but its true nature is still unknown...
(And some mental funda -- mind exists..though it is weightless in nature.. and there are forces which affect it..like perception of anything by any of your senses like vision, smell, touch etc...
So dont worry...soon i wll come up with a theory and then u dnt have to differentiate...)

'Because that is the way that the mind expresses health and is indicative of healthy operation in all higher evolved beings. Abnormality would express as the fixation or obsession to differientiate, or qualifying this expression in both function and form with bigotry.

I enjoyed this question. When you feel happy or sad, what part of you as an organism experiences this -- your mind or your body? Does your knee feel happy, or your neck feel sad?

Very often, the distinction is based on states of being. If you make the grammatically correct statement (linguistic) of "I am happy" which part of you as an organism is happy.

Conversely, if you feel pain, where do you feel pain? In the mind, or in the body? Does your mind ache? Does your mind burn? Does your mind experience stinging or burning?

Physical is doing. Mental is thinking. However, they are linked. You think about something, then do it. You do something, then think about it. If you never think, you won't be able to do anything successfully. If you never do anything, you can never have anything to think about, or base your thoughts and ideas on.

Usually when we differentiate between the two we are referring to the brain's program we call "the mind".
