I am 36 weeks pregnant. This is what I am feeling: i get a low dull backache that really doesnt go away for about 30 minutes or so, but every so often (no more than 3 times in an hour) the pain will come around to the front lower abdomin. it feels just like period cramps. I was wondering what this is. I know some people have said that braxton hicks are painless that is why i am confused. i dont want to call my doctor because they will most likely have me come down ( i have already been in for false labor and dont want to do that again). Any advice?

You are 36 weeks so you are right at full term. The baby would be fine and the doctor probably wouldn't even try to stop your labor. You are likely at the beginning stages of labor but not ready just yet. This can last a couple weeks or a couple of hours. An easy way to track your contractions is to lay on your left side with your hand on the top of your uterus. You should be able to feel the tightenings that way. To make sure they are real contractions, drink a couple glasses water, eat a snack, and empty your bladder before you start tracking them. Being dehydrated, hungry or having a full bladder will all bring on false contractions. Track the contractions over a one hour time. Track the distance from one start to the next start and also how long each is. Another thing to watch for is if your whole uterus gets hard or just in places. Real ones should be hard all over. If there is any consistency in the contractions, go ahead and call the Ob/gyn so they know you are getting ready. They will then tell you when they are ready for you to come. I delivered in three different hospitals and they all said different things such as: When you feel a band of pain around the stomach and back, contractions within 10 minutes, and also if you have more than 5 per hour. Other signs to watch for is a thick discharge and a different colored discharge such as bloody or brown. If you have any leaking or of course a gush go ahead and get to the hospital now. Good luck!

Could be early signs of labor, you never know. What i would do is relax, drink some water or juice and lay down and keep track of how often these are coming, if they have a pattern, then you might want to get checked, but i would say only go get checked if they are about every 15 to 20 minutes apart. But make sure there is a definate pattern for atleast a couple hours straight and then get checked out....braxton hicks usually don't have a pattern and despite what people say, i think they are painful or atleast can be.

Because of the back pain and pressure as well as the braxton hicks (4 in an hour is a discernable pattern) I would give your doctor or midwife a call. My labor with my 4th consisted of just back pain and my water broke and he was born 15 minutes later. With placenta previa you should not take the risk that it could be labor. Good luck!

This could be it! Braxton-Hicks usually gets better or goes away if you change what you are doing. So if you are walking sit down, if you are lying down, start walking, etc., If it goes away or improves significantly, it is probably Braxton-Hicks.
My advise is to just chill. If it is real labor at some point it is going to be uncomfortable enough that you will know you are having real contractions or your water will break.
Be sure you are clear are when your Dr. wants you to go to the hospital. For examply my Dr. said go to the hospital when your contractions are regular and 5 minutes a part.
Make sure you know how to time a contraction and how to time how far apart they are. The Dr. will want to know,

my doctor says 4 or more in an hour of those types of pains need to be checked out by labor and delivery. Good luck and congrats!

It could be time them over the next few hours if you are really in labour they will get more intense and closer together and you should go to the hospital when they are 7 minutes apart.

It's *probably* Braxton-Hicks. But if they start getting really regular then you need to go in. It's better to be safe than sorry!
