The philosophy of sports is finding what you are good at and improving on it to the best of your ability, then comparing it to others who have done the same..and in the end keeping score of who is best at it,

Philosophy very often includes the study of ethics. What are the ethics of sports? How do we determine a good sport from a bad sport?

As a reader, the Olympics (and Special Olympics) would be an interesting read if there was a focus on how various cultures, religions and genders define ethical behaviour in sports.

For example, are steroids and performance enhancements ethical?

The Philosophy of sports had its beginning in Ancient Greece. It is embodied in the Olymic Ideal. A sound mind in a sound body. To this end, there is competition. Competion is a reflection of the struggles we find in life.

Jean Baudrillard wrote a great piece about France winning the World Cup a few years back. I'd look into that.

Also, his (Baudrillard's) work on joggers and work-out machines in "America" is fantastic.

I think one aspect of sport that would be interesting to talk about is the difference between sport of aesthetic (figure skating) and sport of strength (track and field).

You could bring in Foucault and talk about power, or the stadium and the panopticon. Or Marx and the issue of labor in sport, or of play - the difference between play and work.

Look into classical conceptions of aesthetics, particularly the characterstics of the beautiful. Consider Plato and Aqunias in this regard. Correlate the characterstics of classical aesthetics to our appreciation of athletic events like the Olympics. Also, consider Aristotle in terms of his sense of the dramatic and the role of spectacle.
