There is no debate. Jim Brown was the greatest "PLAYER" ever to put on pads let alone best running back.
He did things in 12 and 14 games seasons that took most 16 games to do.
He once rushed for 1,527 yards in 12 games.
He also rushed for 1,863 yards in 14 games.
He only played for 9 yards and could have played for 15 to 17 easily and would have come close to doubling his career totals. Putting the rushing record way out of reach.
No other man in the history of the NFL has put more fear into opposing defenses than Jim Brown. When he announced his early retirement NFL defenses rejoiced in celebration!
The rest will always be second best in comparison.

Bo Jackson would be on this list if not for his knee injury. I would say Emmit Smith or Barry Sanders. 10 yrs from now people will be talking about LaDainian Tomlinson, Reggie Bush, DeAngelo Williams, and Warrick Dunn as the best (just an opinion).

Barry Sanders! This is coming from a Packer fan that watched as Barry tore up our defenses even in the SuperBowl years. All of his career he played on horse crap teams, with worse offensive lines. Put him on almost any other team of his career and he would have outshined Jim Brown easily.

Barry Sanders = He had no blocking but still managed to be considered one of the greatest. there is no arguments to be made! Every other great back has had one he// of a line plowing the way( including Walter Payton), but not Barry. Barry did it by his God D*** self.
Question over and no further answers should be needed.

I haven't answered a question like this in a while, so now's as good a time as any to do so.
In my view, Walter Payton gets the slight nod over Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith, but others might feel differently.
