Will this cause a change in the way goods are transported and what effect will it have on the economy of the US and Canada?

Well I did, I use mass transit for everything now.

But I doubt the majority of the population will until a new, cheap and convient method of transportation is released.

The technology is out there, unfortanatly all the patents for them have been bought up by the big oil and auto companies, just to be put deep in the basement to collect dust.

An engine that will actually run on water has been invented years ago, but do you see or hear anything about it now?

Not really. commute to work is not gonna change much. People need to get to their jobs. But the transportaion and shipping business may show more change. I think the american people are being taken advantage of and some big money makers are controlling the market. Try to downsize your car for the meanwhile

I. for one, have stopped using the car. Fortunately, I live within walking distance of grocery, drugstore, library and doctors. I carpool to work, which is the only way to afford it (my car is too small for the carpool so I pay a little extra). I hate to think what it's doing to grocery and discount stores.
